ACE2 is a carboxypeptidase that catalyses the conversion of angiotensin I to the nonapeptide angiotensin 1-9, or the conversion of angiotensin II to the vasodilator peptide angiotensin 1-7. It is expressed in a wide range of cell types, but notably in vascular endothelial cells of the heart and the kidneys. ACE2 is an important regulator of heart function and also serves as functional receptor for the spike glycoprotein of some coronaviruses, including SARS.
